A Midwestern Weekend - Part II: Wrap it UpSaturday morning, my sister and I got up and opened our Christmas presents. She gave me a really pretty figurine set of two sisters praying together, one ooh-la-la sweater that I love but would never have picked out on my own, plus a black cashmere turtleneck--just what I asked for!
Next, we went to Waffle House. I've been all over the United States (visited 40 of the 50 so far), and somehow, I had never had the pleasure of dining at any of the Waffle House establishments that dot the highways of our great land. Honestly, Waffle Houses look a little...unappetizing and scary, despite the word "Waffle" right in the name. It's been a difficult conflict for me. Well, I threw caution to the wind (plus, Meegan had a great coupon) and went to waffle house. What can I say? Like everything by my sister's house, it was brand new and totally clean. Susan, our waitress, was friendly and attentive. We each had waffles, toast, eggs, bacon, AND hashbrowns, plus coffee for me and juice for Meegan. The bill was less than $10. I have three words: God Bless America. And three more: Hooray Waffle House!
Next, we did a little shopping and got Meegan's nails done--she has acrylics and they were in desperate need of emergency repair. Then we went back to Meegan's house and started baking cookies. It took forever. I'm not very practiced at rolling dough (plus, since had no rolling pin, we were using a bottle of wine with the dough sandwiched between waxed paper), and it was tough. The hardest part was getting the cut out dough from the waxed paper to the cookie sheet. We only baked about 5 at a time. 4 dozen cookies later, it was time to start getting ready for the party, so we didn't have time to do the fun part--decorating with colored frosting and sprinkles! Oh well. I think the dough was too sticky and we were rolling the dough too thin (that was my bad. sissy wanted thicker cookies, but once I have my mind made up...Forget it.)
Anyway, off to the Holiday Party, but first a stop at the purse store where Meegan works part time. I got ANOTHER purse. I can't help it. It's an addiction. At the party, I got to see some of Meegan's friends that I hadn't seen in a while, plus meet a couple others that I had heard about but never met. There was a gift exchange and cookie decorating--neither was not exactly family-oriented. The gift I gave was a very silly Justin Timberlake bobble head doll from his boy band days. The box said "2001 Collectors Edition" so I considered it vintage. I ended up with a variety of condoms. Lovely. We played a game where we re-wrote the words to "Twas the Night Before Christmas" and then decorated a scene from our revised story on a giant cookie. Our poem rocked and the fact that we didn't win was basically criminal. At least I got some cookie decorating in. Several glasses of sangria and a couple shots later, it was 3:30AM and definitely way past my bedtime. Meegan drove us home. I passed out in the car. 99.9% of the time, I am the designated driver with a sleeping drinker in my passenger seat, so this was an interesting role reversal. thanks sissy!
Sunday morning: not a good scene. Perhaps I was out too late. Perhaps I'm way too old to be shooting tequila. Perhaps I shouldn't have tried to cram so much activity into one weekend. Alas, it was time to go to the football game. One of Meegan's friends gave her tickets which was so nice--7th row seats! The Chiefs were playing the Ravens. The fans were crazy. My cutie sister was on the jumbotron at least 3 times. It was really fun. We left early to avoid traffic and rest for 30 minutes at home before heading to evening church service. Meegan goes to a mega-church in Overland Park, KS. As we were walking in, they were singing "O Come All Ye Faithful" which is one of my holiday favorites. There was a great sermon about God choosing the unlikely to do the extraordinary. And then, HOORAY, a wonderful soloist sang "Oh Holy Night" which is only my all-time favorite Christmas song. It's so hard to sing, but when someone does it well, I think it's awesome. This guy was definitely of the awesome variety.
Next, dinner with Mom and Dad. I can't write about it. The problems I'm having with my parents are depressing, frustrating, and pitiful. We ate a great meal, then talked about our disagreements for about 3 hours. Meegan and I left around 1am. It's so hard to see them.
Monday morning was an early flight back to DC. Steve picked me up at the airport and dropped me off at the office. I was wiped-out, but managed to make it through the day and go to bed at 8:00. What a weekend!
